Description of Program:

  • The Mudgeeraba Hand Clinic Hand Fellowship offers comprehensive training in both elective and trauma-related hand and wrist surgery. Fellows gain experience under the guidance of orthopaedic and plastic surgeons working collaboratively within a single, integrated unit.
  • The fellowship provides exposure to a broad spectrum of procedures, including arthroscopy, microsurgery, arthroplasty, and trauma. Fellows will assist consultant surgeons in theatre, attend dedicated fellow and consultant clinics, and manage the follow-up of their surgical cases. Clinical work is supported by a multidisciplinary team of seven hand therapists, with backgrounds in both physiotherapy and occupational therapy, ensuring a holistic approach to patient care.
  • The fellowship also includes participation in clinics and surgical lists at the Queensland Children’s Hospital, working with Associate Professor David Graham. This includes a fortnightly paediatric hand clinic and theatre sessions, as well as monthly cerebral palsy and spasticity clinics.
  • Fellows will progressively assume responsibility for weekly independent trauma lists, with a mix of supervised and unsupervised cases depending on their level of experience and progression. Supervision is provided by Dr Graham or Dr Williams, who will be available in the adjacent operating theatre.
  • The unit conducts regular handover meetings with therapists, journal club sessions, and clinical audit meetings, fostering a collaborative and educational environment.
  • The overarching goal of the fellowship is to provide high-quality, immersive exposure to all key areas of hand surgery (excluding brachial plexus and targeted muscle reinnervation), with a strong emphasis on clinical decision-making and operative planning.
