The fellow will have completed their specialist surgical training including their final exam.

The fellow will be involved with all manner of orthopaedic hand surgery. This will include a large amount of hand trauma, as well as elective hand surgery, both in the public hospital and private hospital setting.

At the end of their run a fellow would be expected to be competent with decision-making and surgical treatment of all orthopaedic hand trauma and have a good grounding in elective orthopaedic hand surgery.

Clinical Fellowship in Hand and Upper Limb Surgery

The Fellow would perform clinical duties involved with the management of disorders of the hand and upper limb and would have a regular on call commitment at Flinders Medical Centre under the supervision of a hand surgeon. Educational Goals and Characteristics

The Fellowship offers the opportunity to gain surgical experience and instruction in the management of disorders of the hand and upper limb. The candidate will have a Fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or have extensive clinical experience in orthopaedic surgery. Candidates from overseas will have qualification of equal standing.

Flinders Medical Centre is a teaching hospital associated with Flinders University. There is access to a cadaveric lab.

South Western Sydney Hand Centre, Fairfield

There is a 1 in 3 on-call with extensive exposure to hand trauma (20+ new referrals per day). The fellow is under close supervision by VMO’s (3 plastic surgeons and 2 orthopaedic surgeons). The weekly timetable can be tailored to the candidates training needs with excellent base salary.

This position would suit either post FRACS surgeon seeking further training in hand trauma or a trainee (plastics/orthopaedics) with a genuine commitment to becoming a hand surgeon.

Hand Fellowship

The Departments of Hand Surgery at St Luke’s Hospital and Sydney Hospital offer a fellowship in hand surgery to suitably qualified applicants which provides clinical experience at each of the two hospitals over a 12 month period.

The fellowship is suitable for surgeons who have completed training in orthopaedic, plastic or general surgery and who intend to pursue a full time career in hand surgery. The successful applicant will undertake clinical duties at each of the two hospitals and will be expected to complete a research project ready for publication during the 12 month period.

Position Profile

The Department of Hand Surgery at Fremantle Hospital is a combined Orthopaedic and Plastic Surgical Hand Unit undertaking traumatic and elective workload. The unit runs during working hours and not after hours or on weekends or public holidays, although there is the opportunity to be involved in the on-call roster at Fiona Stanley Hospital. We run an all-day trauma operating theatre and a morning trauma clinic, as well as some elective clinics and elective operating theatre sessions.

Jeff Ecker Hand Wrist Fellowship Program

A 6 month fellowship is provided for specialists in training who want to gain further experience in hand and wrist surgery.

The fellow will receive one-on-one mentorship with hand and wrist surgeon, Mr Jeff Ecker, in both clinic and operative settings.

The fellow will be involved in all aspects of adult hand surgery, gaining experience in pre-operative and post-operative management, will be exposed to various conditions and injuries, and immersed in the latest surgical techniques relevant to the hand and wrist.

The fellow will have active involvement in the hand and wrist clinic, and routinely assist in surgery with both elective and trauma cases.

Collaborating with Mr Ecker and his research team, the fellow will prepare and publish a minimum of one paper in a peer reviewed journal during the program.

Requirements/criteria

  • Nationally/internationally trained specialist who has completed a fellowship in orthopaedics or plastic surgery, and has basic microsurgical and arthroscopic skills.
  • Applicant must be eligible to apply (or be currently registered) to practice medicine in Australia, as recognised by the AHPRA.
  • Advanced skills in the English language (competent in both oral and written as per the AHPRA registration standards).
  • Obtain indemnity insurance and health insurance.

Royal Childrens Hospital Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery Department Paediatric Hand and Microsurgery Fellowship

A Fellowship in paediatric hand surgery and microsurgery is available for a 12 month period beginning August 1st, for surgeons who are seeking to specialise in paediatric hand and microsurgery.

Applicants will require a Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery or equivalent qualification. Previous experience in Paediatric Hand and Microsurgery is desirable. The successful applicant will be exposed to a broad range of Paediatric Hand, Peripheral Nerve and Reconstructive Microsurgical cases and in addition to the clinical experience, will also be expected to develop and complete a research project and be involved in clinical audit and also training and supervision of junior staff.

Dandenong Hospital Hand Surgery Fellowship

This is a 12-month AOA accredited position suitable for a candidate preparing for a career in hand and wrist surgery.

Applications are invited for a Hand Surgery Fellowship position at Dandenong Hospital, Southern Health, Melbourne.

The successful candidate will be involved in emergency and elective cases, on call from the emergency department and outpatient care.

The successful candidate will also be involved in continuing education to undergraduate students, residents and registrars in the surgical training program, journal club and audit. The fellow will be expected to complete clinical or laboratory research suitable for presentation and publication. Laboratory research will be carried out at the Hand and Wrist Biomechanics Laboratory, O’Brien Institute/St. Vincent’s Institute of Medical Research.

The fellowship commences in August and applications close 31 May the year before the commencement date.

Victorian Hand Surgery Associates Fellowship

Two clinical fellowships in Hand Surgery are available for 12 month periods for surgeons who have successfully completed their surgical training and are interested in further training in Hand Surgery.

One of these positions is available for applicants appointed to the PFET program in Hand Surgery administered by the Australian Hand Surgery Society. The successful candidates will work with the surgeons of the Victorian Hand Surgery Associates in private practice and with the Plastic and Hand Surgery Unit at St. Vincent’s Public Hospital Melbourne.

The clinical fellowship involves experience in pre-operative, operative and post-operative management of a wide variety of hand conditions. This will include both elective and emergency conditions including microsurgical resconstruction and replantation. The fellows will also be encouraged to become involved in post-operative rehabilitation with involvement with the private and public hand therapy services.

The fellows will be involved in the day to day running of the hand service including undergraduate and post-graduate teaching, journal club, audit and other clinical meetings and ongoing clinical research. The fellows will also attend regular meetings of the Victorian Hand Surgery Society and will be expected to present papers at the annual scientific meeting of this society.

A stipend is available for successful candidates.

A 12-month laboratory research fellowship is also available. This involves research performed through the Hand and Wrist Biomechanics Laboratory at the O’Brien Institute/St Vincents Institute of Medical Research. This position is open to surgical trainees and post-fellowship applicants. Funding for this position will depend on successful grant applications.
