AHSS Travelling Fellowship

The AHSS Travelling Fellowship is a prestigious award and provides an opportunity for development of an early career Consultant Hand Surgeon. The application processes have been formalized in 2022.
The Travelling Fellowship has been established to promote the advancement of knowledge, skills and leadership of developing AHSS members. It should build international relationships for the AHSS and its members.
The fellowship is aiming to extend the individual’s opportunities, knowledge, and insights in research, education and leadership. The successful fellow is expected to give back from what they have learnt to the AHSS, but also to the local and state hand surgery communities.
Closing date for applications 15th January each year (Provisional)
Interviews will be held at the AHSS ASM (Date to be determined)
Criteria
a. Applicant must have completed their formal surgical training in Orthopaedic, Plastic or General surgery.
b. Ideally have completed the PFET training program, or a fellowship which has a significant involvement of hand surgery.
c. At date of application, be a practicing surgeon for at least 2 full years, so that they have had a chance to understand their role as a consultant hand surgeon. To be in practice for less than 10 years. In special circumstances, applications outside of these time frames will be considered.
d. Must be a financial active member or eligible to be active member of the AHSS at the time of undertaking the fellowship.
Requirements
a. The successful applicant should coordinate their travel to allow attendance at a major international meeting (eg IFSSH, APFSSH, FESSH, BSSH, ASSH meetings).
b. Attend at least 3 significant academic centres over a period of 2 or more weeks.
c. The fellowship will be awarded 2nd yearly.
d. It is desirable that the Fellow make a presentation at each of the institutions visited and submit an abstract for presentation at the international meeting attended.
e. The potential recipient must submit their proposed travel plans in advance for approval by the Education Committee.
f. Fellowship should be completed in the calendar year of the interviews, or the following year. The fellowship can be taken in 1 trip or separate trips.
g. The successful applicant will be supported for travel, registration and accommodation expenses for the meeting and visits to centres before or after the meeting to a maximum of $18,000.
