Dr James Masson led trips to Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH), and Goroka 199 in 1997, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 in conjunction with Interplast. During the 2010 trip, 47 patients were reviewed, and 18 surgeries performed, predominantly hand surgeries with burn contractures and secondary reconstructive surgery for old tendon and nerve injuries. Dr Masson also delivered formal lectures to the department which were well received.
Dr Sarah Coll travelled to Madang, PNG in 2019 with the Pacific Islands Orthopaedic Association. The visit was the hand and upper limb teaching module for the surgeons enrolled in the PIOA training program run by orthopaedic surgeon Dr Des Soares. The mornings were spent at the hospital doing a ward round with the surgeon presenting a case for discussion and a demonstration of their examination skills. The afternoon was spent with didactic lectures and practical bone school using plates and provided equipment.
Judith Morin has also led hand therapy teams to PNG in conjunction with the surgical visits.
