Professor William (Bill) Cumming AM

Prof Cumming’s first outreach visit to Indonesia was in 1970 and since has travelled to Indonesia 100 times, usually with colleagues and occasionally on his own. His focus has been on developing the breadth of Orthopaedic knowledge and skill. Over this time, he established the AOA supported Indonesian Orthopaedic training program and a Fellowship exam in English which, until very recently, involved Australian Orthopaedic Examiners supporting the progress to an international standard Fellowship exam.

In 1983 Prof Cumming started the AOA supported Orthopaedic Training program in Fiji leading to a diploma for 11 graduates. He travelled to Fiji 20 time for teaching and had similar impact through his 6 visits to PNG where again he established a training program.

Prof Cumming’s outreach work included visits to Cambodia, Afghanistan and Haiti where his presence and cultural sensitivity combined with his mastery of physical signs and surgical techniques always raised the standards and led to a permanent Professorship at Udyana University in Bali and recognition with an Order of Australia (AM). Prof Cumming has also collaborated on outreach trips with Dr Peter Millroy.
