Why did you join AHSS?

Connection with Hand Surgeons across the country is an important way to maintain collegial relationships, establish friendships, foster collaboration in outreach programs, encourage Fellows to be part of our craft group to access these advantages.

Do you have any particular areas of interest in hand surgery practice/research?

My particular interest lies in skills development and teaching, with a focus on Microsurgical skills and replantation practice. International outreach programs remain a focus.

Where did you do Fellowship/PFET training and what were the highlights?

I had the privilege of three Fellowships in Hand and Microsurgery: Douglas Lamb/Willie Souter at PMR in Edinburgh (82/83), Richard Smith MGH (84), Bernard O’Brien, St. Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne (85).

How do you define success?

Providing the highest level of patient care within my capacity to restore function and comfort in combination with transfer of knowledge and skills.

Who is your biggest inspiration and why?

I had the great opportunity to work with outstanding surgeons while a Fellow. Douglas Lamb, Richard Smith, Bernie O’Brien and Wayne Morrison…. all outstanding individuals who placed patient care at the forefront of their practice.

What have been your personal career highlights?

Perhaps being the President’s International Speaker for the ASSH 2016 meeting allowing me a platform to encourage outreach programs and activity to serve under resourced areas.

What advice would you give to new Members of AHSS?

Use the AHSS to develop relationships that will add value to your practice, particularly where you might be able to join in an experienced outreach team to “learn the ropes” of Outreach programs and promote the learning of skills that can be used in developing situations.

What advice would you give your younger post-fellowship self?

Develop a practice with the end goals and arrangements in mind and not just plans to fill the week with activities.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself that not many people know?

My family and I spent 13 years living in Boston followed by 6 years in Phnom Penh, Cambodia returning to Australia in 2003.
